A message from our PTA President
Yesterday was a huge day for our family—our senior took her last AP exam. That means she, along with all of her peers, is one step closer to a new stage of life: going off to college and embarking on new adventures. Although it feels like only yesterday that I took my own last exam, this moment is both surreal, nerve-racking in many ways and exciting at the same time. I am sure it is for many families in our community as well!
A great number of volunteer parents are working hard to make the end of the school journey especially meaningful for graduating families—organizing the senior banquet, finalizing details for the graduation reception, and helping ensure that the school feels like an extra special place during that last week of May. And even if you are not yet a senior parent, this season is extraordinary for our entire community. Saying goodbye is never easy, but it is always a hopeful time.
I invite all of us—especially junior parents—to answer the call for volunteers from the senior activities coordinators to help celebrate the Class of 2026. It’s a wonderful opportunity to pay it forward by showing up. Watching the community come together to support families during one of the biggest moments of their lives is one of the most beautiful and touching gestures I have witnessed in our community. Having been a part of preparations in the last couple of years made me a better senior mom this year.
All parents who are preparing for the promotion of your kids to ES, to MS, to HS, congratulations! Your children are growing and I am sure they will thrive in whatever next chapter they will be in. And so should you!
And finally, an enormous THANK YOU to every single volunteer of the 2025–26 school year! You made yourselves available for countless activities, showered the school with care, and brought your best energy to everything you supported. The ASIJ community is deeply grateful because your efforts created a better school experience for all of us. While we may not be able to thank each of you in person, we hope you take a moment to pause and say to yourself, “I made a difference.” Then relax, treat yourself to something special, and celebrate all you’ve given. Here’s to you!
You are an inspiration to the new PTA Board for 2026–27, which has already come together for its first meeting. Meet the new Board, and let’s be friends! Together, we can move mountains—or at the very least, climb them. Enjoy the week, the weather, and the school!
All the best,
Indre
P.S. Happy belated Mothers’ day to all the amazing moms! You were, you are and you will always be the best reason for celebration!

SAGE Special Screening
ASIJ SAGE (Students Advocating for Gender Equality) is pleased to host a special screening of Black Box Diaries, an Oscar-nominated documentary by Japanese journalist Shiori Ito. The film follows Ito’s personal investigation into her own sexual assault case, highlighting the challenges survivors face within Japan’s legal system and societal expectations. Her story is both courageous and deeply moving, providing insight into the systemic barriers to justice.Because screenings of this documentary are extremely limited in Japan, this is a rare opportunity for our community to view the film and participate in a panel discussion and Q&A with Shiori Ito afterward. Student organizations, including SAGE, Enough is Enough, and the Law Society, will help facilitate the discussion.
Date: Friday, May 15
Doors open: 3:00PM | Intro: 3:15PM | Film Start: 3:20PM (Runtime: 1 hr 43 min)
Panel & Q&A: 5:05 – 5:45PM (6 PM bus available)
Location: ASIJ Theater
Note: advised for people 15 years and older
Tune in to the latest ASIJ Audio podcast discussion now — Leading from the Middle: Students Driving Inclusivity
What does it take to move from "harmful jokes" to a culture of genuine kindness? In this episode, we sit down with three middle school students who are proving that creating a safe, inclusive environment isn't just a goal for teachers—it's a mission led by the students themselves. They discuss their proactive work in addressing identity-based harm and the specific initiatives they’ve launched to empower their peers. Joining the conversation is Nick Haisman-Smith, who provides expert context on the social-emotional frameworks that support these student-led efforts and the importance of fostering psychological safety in schools.
In this episode: Luca (Grade 8), Diya (Grade 7), Eliza (Grade 6), Grade 8 Humanities teacher Dee Willey, and Nick Haisman-Smith (Institute For Social and Emotional Learning)
